Layer It Up Mantel Style

A solid apartment in NYC is like finding your soul mate.  A lot of first dates and a lot of what my friends and I say “HE’S NOT MY HUSBAND”. Just when you think you’re screwed you find THE ONE.  That’s what happened for me. My apartment, not my husband, still looking for that one.  Inside? A rare gem that you can only wish to find within your rent budget. A fireplace and high ceilings, DONE.  It was like winning a double lottery. Side note can we talk about my fireplace real quick.

  • Advantages to having a fireplace- Looks chic, is great for decor and styling, adds so much character.
  • Disadvantages to having a fireplace- It’s non-working. Sometimes little bits and pieces will just fall off and you’re like wait wtf? The worst is that in the winter when you’re freezing your ass off and you would love nothing more than to have your fireplace to do what it’s actually intended to do, you know provide heat, besides me dressing it up all year long like it’s my #mychicdoll. Yeah, not chic. Sorry just had to vent.

ANYWAY, I really wanted to make it a focal feature in the rooms overall decor. I’m on this layered kick right now, so I wanted to role with it and try some new options.

Let me know what you guys think!

Layout is KEY to a Chic Apartment

Over the past few months, I’ve had a lot of interest in the project, Gramercy, New York.   I want to break down Gramercy in a few separate posts to detail how I designed this apartment and the ideas that went behind it. For this first post, I am going to break down the layout of this space.  It’s so important that the layout is right for your space so that all the elements, such as the gallery wall and giant ass fiddle leaf tree, shine through!

My biggest thing as a designer is that a layout has to not only function for my clients, but it also needs to make sense! I see projects where things or furniture seem to just been placed to fill the space (I’ll get into how negative space can be a good thing in another post) and it just looks forced and awkward. So not chic. When you walk into a room, you should never be struck with an obstruction.  It should always feel open and welcoming.  This is why I placed the two chairs near the window.  The window seating area allows for the most natural light into the room.  Having two pieces of furniture in that area will make the space feel less heavy than if you were to have had the larger leather chair there.  Also, the leather chair can swivel and be moved to the corner where the reverse books are.  It also can swivel around to join the dining area.  The sofa was placed against the left wall because the view is of the water from that side.  Placing the sofa here allowed for a cool juxtaposition to the inset in the wall where the gallery art is hanging.  Ultimately, the seating areas create what I call a traffic flow. It allows for a casual observer or guest to move through the space effortlessly and comfortably without jarring their motion.  Laying out the room like this allowed us to achieve the key factors we were aiming for.

The idea of having the floating media unit gave the room negative space we needed.   Not only did it make the area lighter, so to speak, it also allowed the showcase of all of my clients’ crisp white magazines that he has been collecting over the years.

Another element we were able to achieve through this open layout was the lighting.  Because of the way we designed the room, we were able to take advantage of natural lighting to showcase the art and also brighten the space.  We also incorporated floor and task lighting to cater to my clients’ #bookaddicted reading habits without creating a harsh,  overhead and artificial LED spotlight affect.

Also, because we were playing with a lot of linear qualities within the space, round tables were the best way to go.  The coffee table is an oval and the side table is also round so that the two chairs can fit comfortably within the small space, and hold a drink of course. Not only do round + oval tables  offer the best solution for traffic flow, but they also adhere to space restraints. Finally, the round pieces we chose allow for more light to come into the space because they have thin legs and a glass top.

I hope this helps you with your layout woe’s.  Remember, just think “does this layout make sense? Am I just filling this space because I feel like it needs to be filled or does it work within my overall vision?”

LOUIS GRAY | The Epitome of QUILT-CHIC

As most things happen in life (or if you’re addicted to your favorite Instagram feeds such as I am; GUILTY)  I came across this geometric chic image and was immediately drawn in.   Completely unaware that I was about to think a quilt was chic..I know, A QUILT, but even these quilts deserve their plaque of chic on the wall.  LOUISE GRAY is the vision of Alexandra Gray Bennett & Jocelin Johnson. How did these two come together? Through the powers of social media of course! NO, I’m not sure, but who cares because they’re serving us with quilt-chicness that I never thought could have EVER existed.

Alexandra has a family background in quilt-making and Jocelin, a graphic designer, came together to form what is the epitome of quilt chic.  Their eye for minimalist design and pattern, mixed in with the art of hanging them for sculpture is perfection.  Leaving no details unnoticed, these 100% cotton and supreme loft batting quilts which are handmade in the US, can be used for their origin purpose of warmth and comfort, but also as pieces of art.  Alexandra & Jocelin designed the chicest quilt hangers to match showing off these beauties in all their glory.  The wall hangers (just as chic) are made of hickory wood (multiple finishes offered) with either black or brass bolts.

Their quilts have even caught the eyes over @CB2.  They’ve collabed to bring a limited stock of throws and pillows. Check them out here!

Whether you’re looking to dress up your sofa or find an alternative to that “accent” wall paint color, why not try one of these quilts instead, would you?

BTW their insta is just as you would expect, #chic. Follow them @louisegray_studio

Marble Me #chic

What once was the word we used to describe a childhood game most of us played with or probably put in our mouth’s #guilty, now has a new definition. Marble is now a cool, urban, and #modernchic print we are seeing everywhere and on everything. The print of classic carrera marble has been seen all over from high-end fashion designers and their stores to affordable finds from HM Home, marble is changing the #stylegame everywhere. So, why marble? I think the undeniable answer is simple, it’s #chic. It’s clean, organic, modern, and offers a sort of casual effortless elegance we’re all looking for.   Did I mention that it’s a natural stone and will forever be timeless? This being the case, I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite marbleized items to help get you on the #marblechic wave.

Menotti's Coffee Shop| Venice Beach

Screen Shot 2017-02-10 at 2.03.13 PM.png

Right near the V E N I C E sign is Menotti’s Coffee Stop. First off, they serve crack. Ok, not actual crack, but the coffee will make you want to swing from that dam Venice sign. The vibe is for sure #chicapproved with a hint of BK coffee shop style vibes and love. The interior is just as cool with a color story of clean white subway titles, brown reclaimed wood and black steel, vintage inspired signage and accents throughout. They also have this #retrochic bicycle that I almost started riding around, but then I remember I wanted to be allowed back the rest of the week.  *Also, I KNOW I HAVE HOLES LITERALLY COMING OUT OF MY ASS…  they’re from my days when I worked at HOLLISTER&CO. [YES, I KNOW] were perfect for the Venice Beach vibes.

The coffee bar is like an actual bar. No, like for real, it is. The barista, who by the way was totally cute and tatted and could be my future bf but he doesn’t know it yet, freshly makes your whatever and actually pours and measures everything out in a jigger. Served up coffee cocktail? Check. There’s then a small little bar where you can add all the usual shit we all put in our coffee, unless you’re a hardcore #chicbitch and take it all black. The bar has international coins on the surface top from all over the word covered by a glass top. (stealing this design idea THANK YOU).  Basically this place is just the shit and you need to go there when you go to Venice to take your CLICHÉ VENICE PIC.
